    Fire Warden / Marshal Course

This course provides a clear understanding of the responsibilities, duties and role of a Fire Warden/Marshal, conforming to all the requirements of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety Order) 2005. Delegates will also be trained to identify and rectify problem areas, with the end result being a safer workplace.

The evacuation of all personnel within a building should be clear and contained in staff guidelines. They should be regularly rehearsed as a part of every evacuation or fire drill and we cover this extensively within the course. •

    Syllabus

    • Introduction to the course
    • Legislation
    • Basic fire awareness (Triangle of fire, media for extinguishing fires etc.)
    • Responsibilities of fire wardens / marshals
    • Liaison with staff
    • Fire fighting equipment: types, uses & method of use (including practical demonstration and student use if required)
    • Action before & after the alarm sounds
    • Drills & the debrief process
    • On-going risk assessments & the need for instant corrective action & reporting defects
    • External & internal exits
    • Staircases
    • Waste management
    • Signs, notices & alarm panels
    • Review Course

    Duration: 4 hours

Practical Portable Fire extinguishers training is optional to the course but we always strongly recommend that all staff be familiar with equipment that they may use. This element of training can be added on to the fire Marshall / Warden training which lengthens the course to a full days training.

    Fire Safety Management Training

    Syllabus – 2 Days (2nd Day optional)

Good management of fire safety is essential to ensure that fires are:

    • Unlikely to occur
    • That if they do occur, they are likely to be controlled and/or contained safely
    • And, if a fire does occur and grow, all relevant persons can escape to a place of total safety easily and quickly.

The management of fire safety could be the responsibility of the ‘Fire Safety Manager’ and often this role is added to a more generic management position.

Therefore FCS has produced a 2-day course that enables delegates to fully understand this critical role and the identified responsibilities for fire safety. It also allows attendees the benefit of assisting their organisation to be compliant with legislation, regulations, and guidance.

The roles and responsibilities of a Fire Safety Manager (FSM) will depend on several factors including: the management structure & size of the organisation, the authority of the FSM, and the resources available

    The responsibilities will include:

    1. Understanding your legal responsibilities/duties
    2. Preventing fires from occurring
    3. Knowing the fire safety features of building and how to maintain them
    4. Identifying non-compliance and how to rectify deficiencies
    5. Carry out/monitor the fire risk assessment
    6. Understanding the emergency plans and evacuation strategies
    7. Understanding the fire safety policies & arrangements of your organisation
    8. Testing & maintenance of active & passive fire safety measures
    9. Training of employees
    10. Liaising/cooperation with employees, contractors and enforcing authorities
    11. Keeping records of tests, maintenance, and training
    12. Reviewing the fire risk assessment, training, and fire safety arrangements.

Covered in the first day by remote / distance learning will be:

    1. Legislation
    2. Management
    3. Fire risk assessments, including common hazards and risks
    4. Automatic fire detection & alarm and emergency lighting systems
    5. Firefighting equipment
    6. Safety signs
    7. Human behaviour & evacuation strategies
    8. Means of escape.

Each of these mini sessions will have a Q&A to ensure learning is achieved.

The 2nd day (optional) can be done either on-site or again by distance learning and looks at real-world issues when dealing with fire safety, starting with the basics of a fire risk audit/assessment and the common issues that can cause non-compliance, along with problem solving and a final informal assessment of the skills and knowledge gained.
