    • Building Regulations: The primary legislation governing fire safety in the UK is the Building Regulations. Part B (Fire Safety) focuses on fire precautions within buildings and provides guidelines for the installation, testing, and maintenance of fire dampers. 
    • BS 9999: This British Standard provides recommendations for fire safety in the design, management, and use of buildings. It outlines the importance of fire dampers and their appropriate installation in various types of buildings. 
    • Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005: This legislation places a duty on the responsible person (building owner, employer, or occupier) to carry out a fire risk assessment and ensure the safety of occupants. It emphasizes the need for properly functioning fire dampers as part of the fire safety strategy. 
    • HVCA DW/145: This is a guidance document issued by the Heating and Ventilating Contractors’ Association (HVCA), which provides comprehensive recommendations for the installation, maintenance, and testing of fire and smoke dampers. You can also refer to the VH001 document from the BESA which can be found here.
    • Manufacturers installation details: This information is critical, as this is how the damper has been tested and defines how, and where, a damper can be installed. All damper manufacturers test their damper in line with BS EN 1366 pt 2 which is the specific test for dampers. If the installation details have not been followed, this can lead to your damper not providing the required compartmentation needed and putting life and the building at risk.
